Gr. 9/9+. This sign was made by Whitehead & Hoag, the manufacturer best known for making celluloid pins and buttons. The lithography includes a thin film of celluloid on the paper, giving the piece a rich, deep color. This was an expensive process that produced high quality results. The colors and depth of this piece are truly amazing. This sign is one of 13 different signs I bought in a collection of Whitehead & Hoag pieces. I am confident each piece is unique. I believe they were printer's proofs that never were actually produced in quantity. This pieces shows Emil Calman's factory and advertises its Chinese Shellac, Enamolin, Flatlac and Elastic Spar. 21" x 18". 27" x 24" framed. Circa 1908. Click for a close up of top left.
